Abstract:As a tobacco victimized country in the world, China is being burdened by smoking-related illnesses. This paper concentrates on the problem of controlling smoking in China. We propose a mathematical model described by ordinary differential equations with a saturated incidence rate to explore the effect of controlling smoking by setting up designed smoking areas and raising the price of cigarettes. The sufficient criteria for the local and global stabilities of the equilibria are obtained. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed to gain insight into which factors are the most important in controlling smoking. Lastly, we carry out numerical simulations to illustrate and verify the analytic conclusions, and provide a control measure.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between environmental smoking restrictions, distinguished by site, and smoking cessation by Chinese urban residents. Recruited through multi-stage quota-sampling, residents in six Chinese cities were surveyed. Data were both individual-level and city-level. Among 4735 respondents, 715 were identified as successful quitters and 405 as unsuccessful. Multilevel logistic regression analysis showed smoking cessation to be associated with city-level public place and workplace restrictions and individual-level workplace and household restrictions. Results offer justification for decision-makers to implement environmental tobacco control policies and related public health interventions aimed at markedly diminishing the high smoking prevalence in China.

Abstract:Objective: To examine smoking cessation among urban-based Chinese. Methods: Multi-stage random sampling was used to obtain a sample from 21 cities in China. Two logistic regression models were established to identify factors influencing quit intention and smoking cessation. Results: Prevalence of smoking cessation was 10.1%; 45.5% of smokers intended to quit. Women and professionals had higher cessation rates than men and nonprofessionals. Rates of quit intention were highest among managers and clerks, and lowest among those who used gifted tobacco, smoked alone, and reported addiction to nicotine. Conclusion: Individual and city level factors are associated with quit intention and smoking cessation among urban-dwelling Chinese smokers. This information should guide smoking cessation programs and inform health policy.

Abstract:Objective To observe the knowledge,attitude and practice(KAP) of smoking among the community residents in Huangpu District,Shanghai City.Methods During the period from 1996 to 2002,a survey from three-stage stratified sampling was conducted.The data on the influencing factors of smoking among the community residents in Huangpu District were collected and analyzed by SPSS 10.0.Results During the 7 years,the smoking rate of the male inhabitants did not decrease with the improving of their knowledge,and attitude to smoking and was at the same level as Chinese males'.Conclusion Health department and other organizations should take effective measures to make people to adopt health behavior,and to decrease the incidence of smoking and improve people's health.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the association between smoke-free regulations in public places and secondhand smoke exposure and related beliefs, awareness, attitudes, and behavior among urban residents in China. Methods: We selected one city (Hangzhou) as the intervention city and another (Jiaxing) as the comparison. A structured self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection, and implemented at two time points across a 20-month interval. Both unadjusted and adjusted logistic methods were considered in analyses. Multiple regression procedures were performed in examining variation between final and baseline measures. Results: Smoke-free regulations in the intervention city were associated with a significant decline in personal secondhand smoke exposure in government buildings, buses or taxis, and restaurants, but there was no change in such exposure in healthcare facilities and schools. In terms of personal smoking beliefs, awareness, attitudes, and practices, the only significant change was in giving quitting advice to proximal family members. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant association between implementation of smoke-free regulations in a city and inhibition of secondhand tobacco smoking exposure in public places. However, any such impact was limited. Effective tobacco control in China will require a combination of strong public health education and enforcement of regulations.
The Recent Status of Tobacco Smoking in Shanghai Chang-qiao Community

Abstract:To understand the accurate information about tobacco use and factors that influence the behavior of smoking. 2100 Shanghai residents ranging from 13 to 84 years old have been surveyed through random sampling. About 26.7% people are smokers while current smokers are 26.5% and heavy smokers account for 21.5%. Men aged between 40～49 years old are in most serious status of tobacco use. Gender,age group,marriage and education background are the factors related to the current tobacco use. Only 13.4% of current smokers have the willing of quitting. [Conclusion] Intervention on motivation about quitting should be reinforced.

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate student tobacco control advocacy behavioural capacity using longitudinal trace data. Methods A tobacco control advocacy curriculum was developed and implemented at schools of public health (SPH) or departments of public health in seven universities in China. Participants comprised undergraduate students studying the public health curriculum in these 13 Universities. A standardised assessment tool was used to evaluate their tobacco control advocacy behavioural capacity. Repeated measures analysis of variance, paired t tests and paired χ2 tests were used to determine differences between dependent variables across time. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and multivariate logistic regression were used to assess treatment effects between intervention and control sites. Results Respective totals of 426 students in the intervention group and 338 in the control group were available for the evaluation. Approximately 90% of respondents were aged 21 years or older and 56% were women. Findings show that the capacity building program significantly improved public health student advocacy behavioural capacity, including advocacy attitude, interest, motivation and anti-secondhand smoke behaviours. The curriculum did not impact student smoking behaviour. Conclusions This study provides sufficient evidence to support the implementation of tobacco control advocacy training at Chinese schools of public health.
Smoking Prevention and Control among Students of Middle Schools in Shanghai

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To appraise the effectiveness of a school-based smoking control program and explore the effective smoking prevention and control intervention model in middle schools.METHODS:Through two phase cluster sampling, students in grade 1 and grade 2 of two schools were assigned to intervention group and control group. Comprehensive smoking intervention was implemented in the intervention group for one year. The assessment was carried out through three phases: baseline, after intervention, and 6-month after intervention.RESULTS:After intervention, the proportion of attempt smoking rate in the recent one year decreased from 9.7% to 4.2% and the heavy passive smoking rate declined from 15.5% to 12.2%. In addition, some knowledge, attitudes and skills related to tobacco prevention among the students in the intervention group were significantly improved and most effects can be sustained at 6-month follow up survey.CONCLUSION:It is concluded that tobacco control in middle school was effective and feasible and it should be closely integrated with tobacco control in the community.
Influence of The Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Smoking Control in Public Places on residents' smoking behavior

Abstract:[Objective] To assess the changes of smoking status and related influencing factors among residents aged above 15 years in Xuhui District of Shanghai between the first and sixth years of the implementation of The Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Smoking Control in Public Places (hereinafter referred to "the regulations").[Methods] Two household investigations (Health Status and Health Service Utilization Survey 2010 & 2015 in Xuhui District) were carried out using multistage random sampling method with probability proportional to population size.The sample sizes were 11 347 and 10 388 in 2010 and 2015,respectively.Descriptive analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to describe smoking behavior and the influencing factors of smoking or quitting smoking,respectively.[Results] From 2010 to 2015,the standardized current smoking rate of residents aged above 15 years fell from 17.6％ to 14.7％ (from 35.2％ to 29.8％ for men,and from 1.3％ to 1.0％ for women),the standardized quitting smoking rate increased from 17.6％ to 22.8％,and the smokers' age of first cigarette smoking was 0.9 years earlier.The smoking rate,current smoking rate,current daily smoking rate,and heavy smoking rate of residents aged 45 to 59 years were higher than those in other age groups.There was a significant reduction in smoking rate and a significant increase in quitting smoking rate of the respondents aged 30-59 years and 75 years and above (P＜0.01).Male (adjusted OR=51.479),the 45-59 years age group (adjusted OR=1.825),the widowed/ divorced (adjusted OR=1.498),housekeeper (adjusted OR=18.279),the unemployed (adjusted OR=16.625),the retired (adjusted OR=12.057),the employed (adjusted OR=15.453),and drinkers (for those who drink 1-2 times weekly adjusted OR=3.190,and for those who drink ≥ 3 times weekly adjusted OR=5.221) had high risks of smoking;those with college and above educational level (adjusted OR=0.510) and the single (adjusted OR=0.738) had low risks of smoking.Male (adjusted OR=0.336),and those who drink ≥ 3 times weekly (adjusted OR=0.467) tended to keep smoking,while the elderly (for the 60-74 years age group adjusted OR=6.583,and for the 75-years age group adjusted OR=28.521) tended to quit smoking.[Conclusion] The implementation of the regulations is beneficial to the reduction of smoking rate among young and middleaged men,but the tobacco control work is still facing huge challenges,and public health practitioners should adopt more targeted measures.
Susceptibility to Smoking and Determinants among Medical Students: A Representative Nationwide Study in China.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:The rationale behind why the majority of medical students are non-smokers, but some initiate smoking after becoming physicians is not fully understood in China. Exploring factors that may increase susceptibility to smoking initiation among medical students is an essential first step in assessing preventative actions.METHODS:Participants were 11954 students, who were identified through a multistage survey sampling process that included 50 universities in China. Subsequent analysis focused on 8916 non-smokers among medical students. Both unadjusted and adjusted logistic methods were considered in the data analyses.RESULTS:The prevalence of susceptibility to smoking was 23.0%. Multivariate logistic regression analyses found that exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) in domestic places (OR= 1.63) and in public places (OR=1.78), cigarette advertising (OR=1.91) and promotional activities on campus (OR=1.90) were positively associated with susceptibility to smoking. In contrast, positive attitudes toward tobacco control on the part of health professionals, HPs, (OR=0.52) were negatively associated with susceptibility to smoking. Those who received information about the dangers of smoking (OR=0.75) and did not agree that light cigarettes are less harmful to health (OR=0.79) were less susceptible to smoke. Caring about exposure to secondhand smoke (OR=0.68 care, and OR=0.33 very) and advising family members to stop smoking (OR=0.81) were negatively associated with susceptibility to smoking.CONCLUSIONS:These findings underscore the importance of tobacco control training and establishing smoke-free campuses for reducing susceptibility to smoking among medical students.
Air Pollution As a Catalyst for Supporting Tobacco Control Policies? Evidence from a Nationwide Study on Chinese Medical Students

Abstract:Purpose Few studies have discussed how the increasing ambient air pollution may affect policy-related attitudes. Medical professionals constitute an important interest group who analyse and solve public issues within a medicalised framework. The current study investigates whether ambient air pollution is associated with a greater likelihood of supporting tobacco control measures among medical students. Methods We conducted multistage sampling among the medical students from 42 cities in China. We employed propensity-score matching to eliminate the selection bias and used multilevel logistic regressions for the main analysis (n1=9458, n2=42). Results we found that city-level air particulate matter is consistently associated with the support for tobacco control among medical students, net of other individual-level and city-level covariates. For one standard increase in air particulate matter, people are 1.21 times more likely to fully support tobacco control measures (p<0.05). This association is significantly stronger among medical students who are financially worse-off and are ethnic majority. Conclusions Environmental pollution has a significant correlation with people’s attitudes towards health policies, even when such policies are not directly concerned with the natural environment. Policy makers may use this opportunity to implement tobacco control measures against the backdrop of China’s pollution crisis.
Tobacco Advertising, Anti-Tobacco Information Exposure, Environmental Smoking Restrictions, and Unassisted Smoking Cessation among Chinese Male Smokers: A Population-Based Study

Abstract:The study examined the prevalence of unassisted smoking cessation among Chinese urban male smokers and factors important in the decision to quit. A cross-sectional survey employing multistage sampling involving 5,782 participants in six cities in China was conducted. Survey respondents reported their smoking cessation status and related individual and environmental variables. Among current smokers 1,112 or 35.0% (95% CI [31.0%, 40.8%]) had attempted to quit and of those who had made such an attempt 87.6% reported that they had done so without assistance. Of all former smokers (3,389), most (97.6%; 95% CI [96.7%, 98.5%]) quit without assistance. Logistic regression analysis showed those who engaged in physical exercise and who had more belief in their ability to quit were more than twice as likely to make a quit attempt and be successful than those in comparable reference groups. Exposure to tobacco advertising was negatively associated with both unassisted quit attempts and success. By contrast, exposure to anti-tobacco information was positively associated with unassisted quit attempts while household and workplace smoking restrictions were negatively associated with unassisted attempts to quit. Most attempts to quit smoking among Chinese males are unassisted. Unassisted attempts to quit smoking and success rates are highly influenced by the presence of environmental smoking restrictions, tobacco advertising, and exposure to anti-tobacco information. Smoking cessation programs and policies in China need to pay greater attention to the social and cultural norms, which perpetuate high levels of smoking.
Changing Behaviour: Blindness to Risk and a Critique of Tobacco Control Policy in China-A Qualitative Study

Abstract:(1) Background: It is well recognised that a focus on changing behaviour remains a dominant and often appealing approach to develop health policies. This study provides a sociological insight into young adults' knowledge of the health effects of smoking cigarettes. We also examine the challenges in tobacco control and criticize the implementation policies in Chinese context. (2) Methods: The study applies both a micro-sociological and a macro-sociological approach using semi-structured interviews and documents as the primary research methodology. Fieldwork was conducted from July to September 2016 and December 2016 to March 2017. The qualitative study involved 45 semi-structured interviews with young adults aged 16-24 years (15 females and 30 males) in Tianjin, China. A grounded theory approach was used for a thematic analysis. (3) Results: The participants knew cigarettes are harmful, although they lacked a comprehensive understanding of the health risks of smoking. Because the health consequences usually emerge after a long period of smoking, young smokers decide to take the health risk. All participants have a general understanding of China's tobacco control policies and think that the implementation is ineffective. (4) Conclusions: Changing in smoking is a process embedded in complex social environments and cultures. Smoking behaviour is not only a personal choice, but also related to personal connections with peers and identity in Chinese society. The Chinese government has made significant achievements in tobacco control since joining the WHO framework convention on tobacco control in 2005. However, implementation needs to be stricter in order to achieve international levels of control, especially in taxes on tobacco product and the price of cigarettes. There is an urgent need for the regulation of e-cigarettes in China.
Current smoking prevalence and influencing factors among university students in Shanghai

Abstract:Objective · To understand current smoking status and analyze its influencing factors among university students in Shanghai, and provide reference and guidance for further efforts of tobacco control in campus. Methods · A total of 4816 students from 19 col eges in Shanghai were selected by stratified multi-stage cluster sampling and the sample size in each part was decided by proportion of col eges and types of specialities. Self-administered questionnaire was conducted to understand the current tobacco use and its influencing factors were analyzed. Results · The overal smoking prevalence of col ege students in Shanghai was 5.80%. General y, smoking prevalence of junior col ege students was higher than that of undergraduates (11.27% vs 3.68%, P<0.05) and smoking prevalence of male students was higher than that of females (11.10% vs 0.95%, P<0.05). Nonsmokers endorsed higher awareness on the harm of smoking and second-hand smoking than smokers(P<0.01). Besides, nonsmokers had a more positive attitude towards tobacco control policy than smokers (P<0.01). Students who studied in the junior college, males, in the senior grade, majored in liberal arts, with higher monthly living expenses, held negative attitude in raising cigarette prices and supporting of establishing smoke-free campuses were more likely to be smokers. Conclusion · Tobacco use among university students in Shanghai deserves attention. It is necessary to carry out systematic and in-depth education to prevent and reduce smoking among the university students.

Abstract:This paper provides a rigorous mathematical study for assessing the dynamics of smoking and its public health impact in a community. A basic mathematical model, which is a slight refinement of the model presented in [F. Brauer, C. Castillo-Chavez. Mathematical Models in Population Biology and Epidemiology. Text in Applied Mathematics. Springer, 2000; G.C. Castillo, S.G. Jordan, A.H. Rodriguez. Mathematical models for the dynamics of tobacco use, recovery and relapse. Technical Report Series, BU-1505-M. Department of Biometrics, Cornell University. 2000], is designed first of all. It is based on subdividing the total population in the community into non-smokers, smokers and those smokers who quit smoking either temporarily or permanently. The theoretical analysis of the basic model reveals that the associated smoking-free equilibrium is globally-asymptotically stable whenever a certain threshold, known as the smokers-generation number, is less than unity, and unstable if this threshold is greater than unity. The public health implication of this result is that the number of smokers in the community will be effectively controlled (or eliminated) at steady-state if the threshold is made to be less than unity. Such a control is not feasible if the threshold exceeds unity (a global stability result for the smoking-present equilibrium is provided for a special case). The basic model is extended to account for variability in smoking frequency, by introducing two classes of mild and chain smokers as well as the development and the public health impact of smoking-related illnesses. The analysis and simulations of the extended model, using an arbitrary but reasonable set of parameter values, reveal that the number of smokers in the community will be significantly reduced (or eliminated) if chain smokers do not remain as chain smokers for longer than 1.5 years before reverting to the mild smoking class, regardless of the time spent by mild smokers in their (mild smoking) class. Similarly, if mild smokers practice their mild smoking habit for less than 1.5 years, the number of smokers in the community will be effectively controlled irrespective of the dynamics in the chain smoking class.

Abstract:Substance addiction such as tobacco, alcohol, opioids, drug addiction and so on are increasing day by day. Awareness about the harmful effects of substance addiction on health and strong will power of people to get rid of the addiction have positive impact on controlling substance addiction. The aim of this research is to examine the impact of awareness and strong determination, the two cognitive factors that have greater impact in preventing substance addiction. Addiction adversely affects self‐efficacy of younger generation, thought processing, metabolisms in human body, psychosocial effects and cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we have developed a mathematical model regarding substance addiction. It consist of six compartments namely, susceptible class, light substance addict class, risk substance addict class, potential substance addict class, rehabilitation class and quitter class. The substance addiction generation number has been determined, and the model is locally asymptotically stable at substance addictions free equilibrium point (SAFEP) when . It is found that, when , a backward bifurcation can occur and when , the substance addictions persistent equilibrium point (SAPEP) becomes stable. Further analysis gives the global asymptotic stability of SAFEP. An application of this model, smoking model, is explored. Smoking model gives a different comparative study which proves the relevance and the importance of our model. We get a clear idea about smokers' behaviour at different stages of high determination and knowledge and also establish the relationship between and these parameters. Finally, we give some recommendations for preventing addiction which can be implemented in society.

Abstract:Our goal of this study is to prevent marijuana smoking in the human population. In this manuscript, an updated mathematical model was established by incorporating two additional compartments: The hospitalized class and the prisoner's class. The updated model was validated, and it was shown to be novel compared to the non-user, experimental, recreational, and addicted (NERA) users' model. This distinction was crucial as it was challenging to prevent marijuana usage without these realistic classes. The entire population was split into six primary groups, including these new classes: non-users, experimental, recreational, addicted, hospitalized, and prisoners' class. Additionally, control techniques for marijuana prevention in the population were addressed with the aid of sensitivity analysis. The important point at which we may have determined the preliminary transmission rate of marijuana smoking was the basic reproductive number $ {\mathbb{R}}_{0} $. Utilizing MATLAB, the Runge-Kutta method of order four was employed for the numerical simulation of the updated model to investigate the impact of control measures on marijuana smoking prevention.

Abstract:To explore effective antismoking intervention measures, measures including flyers and booklets as major mass media, school-based health education and follow-up to smokers were carried out in Beijing, Shanghai and Changsha urban communities. The changes of smoking behavior in population were evaluated by quasi-trial designation. Results showed that smoking rates in adult male, female and both genders decreased by 5.54%, 2.61% and 2.94% respectively and were statistically significant in intervention community. Compared with control community, the net decrease of smoking rates in adult male, female and both were 4.90%, 3.37% and 3.51% respectively. The net increase of quitting rates in adult male, female and both were 4.35%, 17.19% and 6.30% respectively. The net changes in female and in both genders of smoking and quitting were all statistically significant. It was suggested that comprehensive intervention measure with health education as the core might be the priority for the effective community-based antismoking activity. The policy-making and behavior encouraging activities should be focused.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the impact of smoke control legislation in public places in Shanghai.Methods A repeated cross-sectional survey was employed among some schools,hospitals,entertainment places and other kinds of public places in Pudong New Area,Shanghai,between 2010 to 2013.Tobacco control measures and smoking behavior were recorded each time.Results The percentage of keeping tobacco control collateral among the public places had declined from 65.6% in 2010 to 41.0% in 2013 (χ2 =36.04,P <0.000);the percentage of providing smoking areas had declined form 64.4% in 2010 to 35.4% in 2013 (χ2 =51.09,P <0.000);the percentage of no smoking phenomenon had risen from 55.0% in 2010 to 66.9% in 2013 (χ2 =8.29,P =0.040);the average number of smokers during survey had de-clined from 1.18 in 2010 to 0.44 in 2013 (F =0.622,P =0.602).And the percentage of no cigarette ends and no smok-ing phenomenon observed in entertainment places during the 4 years were below 80% and 60% respectively,the lowest level among all kinds of public places;the average number of smokers in entertainment places during the 4 years were 2.06, 1.38,1.15 and 0.77 respectively,the highest level among all kinds of public places,although which showed a declined (F =4.425,P =0.005).Among the totally smoke-free public places,the percentage of no cigarette ends observed had ris-en from 75.0% in 2010 to 87.6% in 2013 (χ2 =8.51,P =0.037);and the percentage of no smoking phenomenon ob-served had risen from 64.4% in 2010 to 78.8% in 2013 (χ2 =11.75,P =0.008).Conclusion Overall,this study shows a weak effect of the legislation on tobacco control in public places in Pudong District,Shanghai,during the 4 years after the ban.However,there was difference in the effect of tobacco control among different kinds of public places in this study.
Analysis on Influencing Factors of Smoking Behaviors among High School Students with Problem Behavior Theory

Abstract:Objective To investigate the factors influencing high school students' smoking-attempt behaviors based on problem behavior theory.Methods The Adolescent Health and Development Questionnaire,which was developed by the proponent of problem behavior theory,was used in the investigation.Students from three high schools in a district of Beijing were selected as research subjects with convenient sampling.Results The rate of smoking-attempt among the 1 352 students was 26.6%(35.5% for boys,18.4% for girls).Compared to the students without smoking-attempt behavior,the students with smoking-attempt had significant lower scores in self-control(3.05±0.80),smoking-related peer control(3.35±0.72),and family control(3.09±0.96).Self-control,peers health behavior models,smoking-related control from peers and family,general family control,and general school support were protective factors for the reduction of smoking-attempt among the students;peer smoking model,community smoking model,easy availability of cigarette,and deviant behavior were risk factors for high school students' smoking-attempt.Conclusion High school students' smoking-attempt behavior could be partially explained by problem behavior theory.
