Abstract:Objective To study the synergetic effects of 900 MHz radio-frequency electromagnetic wave (RF-EMW) and environmental temperature on membrane mechanical properties of single living intact human red blood cell (RBC). Methods The membrane bending elastic modulus (Kc) and shear elastic modulus (μc) of single living intact RBC, which were exposed to 900 MHz RF-EMW at different power densities at 35, 37 or 40 ℃, were observed and measured by multi-dimensional micro-imaging technique and micro dynamic imaging analysis technique. Results There were no significant differences of Kc or μc of RBC membrane before and after 150 mW/m2 and 310 mW/m2 RF-EMW exposure for 30 minutes at 3 temporature conditions respectively (P0.05). Both Kc and μc were increased significantly after 10 000 mW/m2 and 50 000 mW/m2 RF-EMW exposure for 30 minutes at 3 temperature conditions respectively (P0.05). The rates of increase (Kc or μc ) at 35 ℃ and 40 ℃ were greater than those at 37 ℃. Conclusion There are synergetic effects of environmental temperature and 900 MHz RF-EMW with some power densities on membrane mechanical properties of single living intact human RBC.
