Abstract:Objective To investigate clinical and imaging appearances of intracephalic calcinosis in hy-poparathyroidism. Methods 16 cases of intracephalic calcinosis in primary hypoparathyroidism were studied. The authors also investigated the clinical and brain CT appearances of the patients. Results 16 cases were with different degrees of intracephalic calcinosis in primary hypoparathyroidism. The clinical major appearances included: tetany, carpopedal spasms, convulsion, epilepsy and syncope with seizures. The laboratory investigations included: low parathormone serum concentration, hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. CT of the brain showed multiple irregular, patchy, small flaky, belt, semicircular, symmetric or asymmetric high density lesions in the basal ganglia (both caudate and lentiform nuclei), thalamus, frontal lobes, parietal lobes, occipital lobes and temporal lobes. The brain calcinosis may be more extensive in cerebral hemispheres, cerebellar hemispheres and basal ganglia on computed tomography of the head. Conclusion Epilepsy and syncope with seizures possibly related to the calcinosis of brain. It is very significant of brain CT in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the brain calcinosis of primary hypoparathyroidism.
