Role of Gender in the Correlation between the Elderly's Cognitive Function and Social Tie and Social Support

Abstract:Objective To explore the role of gender in the correlation between the elderly's cognitive function,social tie and social support.Methods The investigation was performed with Elderly Multi-dimensional Health Status Questionnaire and the Brief Community Screening Instrument for Dementia.All data were analyzed by SPSS statistical software.Results The prevalence of cognitive dysfunction in elderlys was 10.4%.The score of the contact distance was higher in old men (t=-1.423,P=0.019).Old women out performance men in the score of social tie(t=0.344,P=0.038),social relationship(t=2.030,P< 0.001) and social support (t=1.407,P<0.001).Old men who contacted relatives frequently (OR=0.145,95%CI:0.022-0.956) and had good relationship with neighbors (OR=0.205,95%CI:0.048-0.873) had a lower prevalence of cognitive dysfunction.Women with better cognitive function were those who had more than two contacts (OR=0.113,95%CI:0.018-0.725),or had contacts living in the local (OR=0.222,95%CI:0.074-0.667),contacted with relatives occasionally (OR =0.360,95%CI:0.155-0.834) or frequently (OR=0.341,95%CI:0.147-0.792),contacted with neighbors frequently (OR=0.215,95%CI:0.078-0.591) and had a good relationship with neighbors (OR=0.159,95%CI:0.039-0.681).Conclusion The beneficial effect of social support to cognitive function varied with gender.Gender should be considered for the intervention to the cognitive function ofthe elderly.
