Abstract:Objective:To study the prevalence of different smoking behaviors and their determinants among undergraduate students in Guangzhou.Methods:8 138 undergraduate students grade 1 to 3 were sampled with cluster sampling method from a comprehensive university in Guangzhou,and were inquired about their smoking behaviors and relevant factors with a self-administered questionnaire.Results:Of 8 138 students,77.3% students never smoked,19.6%ever tried to smoke,2.0%smoked un-regularly,1.1%smoked regularly.The students from city significantly less tried to smoke than those from rural areas in both male and female stus,while male students from cities less un-regularly smoked than those from rural areas.Spending over 500 yuan per month was a risk factor for male regular smokers.smoking-related belief,roommates’smoking,and classmates’smoking were significantly associated with male undergraduates' behavior trying to smoke,un-regularly and regularly smoking,and ORs increased with these behaviors after adjusting potential confounding factors.Similar results were obtained in female undergraduates,except for smoking-related belief and classmates’smoking were not significantly associated with regularly smoking.Conclusion:Influence factors for different smoking behaviors were different,and a series of specific measures should be conducted for controlling smoking among undergraduate students basing on the results.
