Abstract:ObjectiveTo explore the effects of capsaicin on lipid metabolism in diabetic rats. Methods The diabetic rat model was induced by STZ. Rats were divided into groups and treated with 0, 3, 6, 9 mg/(kg·bw) of capsaicin, respectively. After four weeks, all of the rats were sacrificed, and the serum and hepatic lipids, neutral steroid in feces, bile acids in feces and intestinal contents, lipase activity of the intestinal tissues were detected. Results Compared with diabetic model group, capsaicin significantly decreased lipase activity of the intestinal tissues, increased the content of bile acids in feces (P < 0.05), lowered the concentration of cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in serum and hepatic lipids, and increased the neutral cholesterol in feces, but these effects were not dose-dependent. In addition, capsaicin could reduce the ER-lipid-droplets in the liver. Conclusion Capsaicin could ameliorate abnormal lipid metabolism in diabetic rats, and the middle and high doses of capsaicin groups were much more effective among all groups. The underlying mechanism is associated with increased excretion of bile acids and neutral sterol in feces, inhibited lipase activity of the intestinal tissues, and reduced fat accumulation in the liver.
