Abstract:Objective:To understand the epidemiological characteristics and seasonal patterns of influenza in China, and analyze the trend of influenza activity.Methods:The percentage of hospital-visit of influenza-like illness (ILI) cases and pathogenic surveillance data in southern and northern China were collected from the 14th week of 2010 to the 13th week of 2020 and the influenza-positive rate was then calculated. The percentage of ILI cases among cases visiting outpatients/emergency departments (ILI%), positive detection rate and the predominant strains of influenza virus were analyzed by descriptive statistics methods. Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the trend of ILI% changes by calculating the annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC).Results:Influenza epidemic presented obvious seasonality in southern and northern China in the surveillance seasons from 2010 to 2019. The winter and spring peaks occurred from the 40th week to the 13th week of the next year in southern and northern China, while small summer peaks appeared from the 20th week to the 35th week in southern China. Different trends of influenza activity were observed in southern and northern China in the surveillance seasons from 2010 to 2019. In southern China, ILI% showed a downtrend (APC=-10.36%) before 2012 and then increased (APC=3.51%). However, ILI% in northern China showed a downward trend from 2010 to 2019 (APC=AAPC=-2.90%). Different types and subtypes of influenza virus had different seasonal patterns, showing that influenza A (H1N1) and B mainly occurred in winter and spring, and A (H3N2) could occur throughout the year.Conclusions:Influenza epidemic had obvious seasonality in China. The results of pathogenic surveillance showed that the predominant types and subtypes of influenza virus were generally similar in southern and northern China. Different types and subtypes of influenza virus had different seasonal patterns. It is necessary to continue etiological surveillance for influenza, improve vaccination strategy and increase influenza vaccine coverage. Influenza vaccination before the epidemic season should be encouraged to reduce the harzard to people by influenza.
