Abstract:Objective To investigate the potential associations between maternal urinary pentachlorophenol (PCP) concentrations during pregnancy and growth as well as neurodevelopment among one-year-old infants. Methods Questionnaires and spot urine samples were collected from 522 mothers who participated birth cohort study previously, which was named as Associations between Prenatal Exposure to Environmental Chemicals and Development of Infants.Anthropometric indexes such as weight, length were measured at one year of age,and neurodevelopmental outcomes were evaluated using the mental developmental screening test (DST) scale.Urinary PCP concentrations were analyzed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).Generalized linear models (GLM) were used to explore whether PCP exposure was in associations with developmental effects. Results PCP were detectable in all urinary samples.Prenatal exposure to PCP was not significantly associated with anthropometric indexes in this study.Significantly inverse associations between mental index and creatinineadjusted PCP concentrations were obtained (P<0.05).Each 10-fold increase in urinary PCP concentration was associated with 5.20 point (95% confidence interval:-9.97,-0.43) decrease in mental index.Numbers of delay on developmental quotient and mental index were found among 31 and 18 infants, respectively.Considering sex difference, the associations of lower in mental index were also found among boys, and delay on motor domain was found among girls. Conclusions The findings suggest that the pregnant women are widely exposed to the PCP in this county.Potential health risks on neurodevelopment were observed in this study. The exactly biological mechanisms and reference dose levels concerning PCP exposure await further investigations.
