Human Papillomavirus Infection and Host Immune Response

Abstract:Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection causes cutaneous and mucous benign proliferative lesions as well as malignancies such as cervical cancer. HPV induces certain low-level host innate and adaptive immune responses. In addition, HPV also employs several immune-evasion mechanisms to escape host immunity, thus facilitating persistent infection. The clinical manifestations and the outcome of HPV infection are determined by interaction of HPV with the host immune system. In this article, the host immune response to HPV infection and the possible mechnisms by which HPV can avoid the immune surveillance ave reviewed.
