Abstract:Objective It is to investigate the protective effect of berberine(BER)on intestinal mucosal barrier function in patients with sepsis. Methods 76 patients with sepsis were randomly divided into BER group(n=42)and control group (n=34).The BER group received berberine orally(300mg,tid)on the basis of normal treatment for sepsis, and the con-trol group was given a placebo. The intestinal function of the two groups was evaluated and the serum DAO,D-lactic acid levels were measured before treatment and after treatment for 1,3,5 days, and the prognosis of the two groups was com-pared.Results The activity of DAO and the concentration of D-lactic acid in the two groups was decreased gradually(P<0.05).The activity of DAO and the concentration of D-lactic acid in BER group were lower than those in control group af-ter treatment for 5 days(P<0.05).On the first day of treatment, there was no significant difference in intestinal function score and enteral nutrition tolerance rate between the two groups(P>0.05),on the 3rd and 5th day of treatment, the in-testinal function scores of the BER group were lower than those of the control group(P<0.05),and the intestinal nutrition tolerance rate was higher than that of the control group(P<0.05).On the 7 th day of treatment, SOFA score and A-PACHE score of BER group were lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).The time of hospitalization in ICU in BER group was shorter than that in the control group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the fatality rate of 28d between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Berberine can reduce serum DAO activity and D-lactic acid concen-tration and protect intestinal mucosal barrier function in patients with sepsis.
