The Study of Child Abuse and Trauma Experience on Adult Mental Health

Abstract:Objective: To explore the effect of psychological maltreatment in childhood and adolescence on adult mental health. Methods: According to CCMD-3 standard, a clinical sample of 34 inpatient and outpatient subjects with a diagnosis of multiple mental disorder were randomly assigned to patient group and 37 nonclinical volunteers were assigned to normal group, and both groups were administered with two self-report questionnaire, Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CAT) and EPQ (adult). 37 of them were retested with CAT after two weeks. Results: Relationship analysis revealed that P and N scores have significantly associated with almost all CAT scores except N with sexual abuse. E scores have significantly negatively associated with general CAT, NEG and EA subscale. Patient group have significantly high scores than normal group in general CAT and NEG subscale. Conclusion: Childhood trauma or abuse do have association with adult psychological disorder and the development of adult personality.
