Mental Health in Pre-adolescence:Development Trends and Gender Differences

Abstract:Objective:To explore characteristics and trends of mental health of children in pre-adolescence. Methods: 2068 primary school (in 3rd grade and 5th grade) and junior high school students (in first grade) were tested by Mental Health Scale for Primary and Middle School Students (MHSPM). Results: A sex (2)×grade(3) ANOVAs were conducted to examine the main effect of two factors on MHSPM total scores. Significant main effects were found on the two factors, no significant interactions were found. Further analysis reveals the specific facets of the differences.Conclusion: Levels of mental health in pre-adolescence decline as the age went up, but different dimensions may have different trends. gender difference was found in mental health and present differently in three groups. In developmental perspective, gender difference changed gradually from interpersonal and adaptive dimensions to self dimension with the growing up of age.
