Abstract:Purpose To analyze the CD10 expression of stromal and epithelial cells in colorectal carcinoma, and to explore the relationship between CD10 expression and clinical biological behaviors of the tumor. Methods CD10 expression was detected by immunohistochemical EnVision method in 90 cases of colorectal carcinomas and 20 normal colorectal tissues. Meanwhile, α-SMA was used to label myofibroblasts of colorectal carcinoma. Results There was no expression of CD10 in the stromal and epithelial cells in 20 normal colorectal tissue samples. Positive rates of CD10 expression in the stromal and epithelial cells in colorectal carcinomas were 26.7% and 57.8% respectively, which showed no difference between high-grade and low-grade carcinomas(P0.05). Stromal CD10 expression in the colorectal carcinomas with muscular invasion was higher than that with serosal invasion(P0.05),but epithelial CD10 expression was unrelated to the depth of invasion(P0.05). Stromal and epithelial CD10 expression in the colorectal carcinomas were not associated with lymph node metastasis(P0.05). Stromal CD10 expression was negatively correlated with vessel invasion(P0.01), but epithelial CD10 expression was positively related to vessel invasion(P0.01). CD10-positive stromal cell was correspondent to α-SMA-positive stromal cell. Conclusions In colorectal carcinoma, the stromal cells seem to prevent metastasis by myofibroblastic differentiation, but CD10 expression by the epithelial cells may be involved in metastasis by dissolving extracellular matrix.
