Abstract:Growth and differentiation factor 11 (GDF 11),a new secretory transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily signal molecule discovered in 1999 is wildly expressed in all kinds of organs and tissues of animals,with highest levels in the spleen.This article reviews studies of functions of GDF11 in regulating embryonic development and its effects on the occurrence and progress of diseases.A clinical prospective of its therapeutic potential is also presented.
