Investigation on the Preoperative Anxiety and Needs in the Parents of Children with Cranial Tumor

Abstract:Objective To investigate the preoperative anxiety and needs in the parents of children with cranial tumor,and thereby to satisfy their psychological needs and provide evidence for nursing care.Method One hundred and fourteen parents of children with cranial tumor were investigated with Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS) and self-designed questionnaire on needs.Results The score of preoperative anxiety in the parents of children with cranial tumor was significantly higher than the test norm level(P0.01).56.14% of the parents showed anxious emotions.The mothers' anxiety score was higher than that of the fathers(P0.01).The score of preoperative anxiety was not related to the parents' age,educational level and occupations(P0.05).Their main nursing needs were learning about the information on the status of children's illness,as well as the effect,risks and prognosis of operations.Conclusion The nurses should take various psychological nursing care depending on the diversified needs,and thereby to relieve the parents' preoperative anxiety.
