CT and MR imaging features of polysplenia syndrome: a literature review of 5 cases

Abstract:Objective To analyze the imaging findings of polysplenia syndrome on thoracic and abdominal CT and MRI, for increasing the awareness for polysplenia syndrome. Methods CT and MR imaging manifestations and clinical data of 5 polysplenia syndrome were analyzed retrospectively. Results Of those 5 cases, full situs inversus was found in 3 cases, partial situs inversus in 1 case, short pancreas in 4 cases, midline live in 1 case, midline gallbladder in 2 cases, intestinal malrotation in 3 cases, IVC hepatic segment absent, hepatic vein directly into the right atrium were found in 2 cases, azygos vein or half azygos vein dilation connection with the superior vena cava in 3 cases, hepatic artery opening in the superior mesenteric artery in 1 case. Conclusion Understanding the various abnormal CT and MR findings of polysplenia syndrome could raise awareness of the polysplenia syndrome, reduce the incidence rate of misdiagnosis. Contrast enhanced thoraco-abdominal CT or MRI is useful for evaluating cardiac and abdominal visceral anomalies in polysplenia syndrome.
