The Value of Sonography in the Pathologic Staging of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei before Surgery

Abstract:Objective To analyze the sonographic features of pseudomyxoma peritonei and the value of sonography in the pathologic staging of pseudomyxoma peritonei before surgery.Methods 62 patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei underwent sonographic examinations before surgery.According to the postoperative pathological results,the subjects were divided into the high-grade group and the low-grade group.The clinical factures,sonographic characteristics,representations in the surgery and pathologic grades were recorded.Then we compared sonographic characteristics with representations in the surgery and analysed the differences between different pathological level of pseudomyxoma peritonei.Results The liver or spleen pressure trace,the abdominal or pelvic mass and abdominal lymph nodes revealed statistically significant differences between different pathologic staging of pseudomyxoma peritonei,but the existence of "retinal cake" had no statistical difference.The thickness of "retinal cake" and ascites characteristics also had statistical difference.Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA),carbohydrate antigen 125(CA125),carbohydrate antigen 199(CA199),carbohydrate antigen 724(CA724)and carbohydrate antigen 242(CA242) raised in pseudomyxomaperitonei patients,but there is no statistical difference between different groups.Conclusions Preoperative sonographic examinations have some clinical application value in the diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei.Ultrasonographic features in different pathologic staging of pseudomyxorna peritonei are overlap,but certain may help us to make some differential diagnosis.
