Abstract:Objective To investigate the effectiveness of temporary balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta during removal of sacral tumors. Methods Four cases with chordomas and 2 cases with giant cell tumors were included. A plastic balloon was placed at the distal abdominal aorta just before operation. During operation, the balloon was inflated to block the blood flow in the aorta at intervals. Results The operations were all successfully accomplished. The loss of blood ranged from 500 ml to 4000 ml, with an average of 1683 ml during the operations. The drainage of the wounds ranged from 100 ml to 1200 ml, with an average of 600ml after the operations. No postoperative complication of embolism or ischemic necrosis was found. Conclusion Temporary balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta is a valuable method that may help to reduce the loss of blood during removal of sacral tumors.
