A Double-blind Controlled Trial of Folic Acid in the Treatment of Negative Symptoms in Schizo-phrenics

Abstract:[Objective] To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of folic acid in the treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenics .[Methods] For this double‐blind controlled trial ,a total of 106 schizophrenics with predominantly negative symptoms on a monotherapy of perospirone hydrochloride were assigned into trial (folic acid ,n =53) and control (placebo ,n =53) groups .During an observation period of 12 weeks ,all par‐ticipants completed the scales of scale for the assessment of negative symptoms (SANS) and treatment emer‐gent symptom scale (TESS) to assess the status of negative symptoms and adverse drug reactions at baseline and at the end of weeks 4 ,8 and 12 of treatment .[Results] Compared with baseline data ,the total SANS scores of both two groups significantly decreased at weeks 4 ,8 and 12 .And the differences had statistical sig‐nificance ( P <0 .05) .The mean total SANS scores of study group were lower than those of control group at weeks 4 ,8 and 12 .And inter‐group differences existed ( P <0 .05 ,P <0 .01) .Furthermore ,study group had a higher declining rate than control group at week 12 .And the changes showed significant inter‐group differences ( P<0 .05) .No significant inter‐group difference existed in the ratio of adverse drug reactions ( P>0 .05) .[Conclusion]Folic acid is both effective and safe for improving negative symptoms in schizophrenics .
