Abstract:Objective: To assess the effect of serum lipids levels in patients with epilepsy who had been receiving long-term carbamazepine, sodium pheyntom, valproate therapy. Methods; Serum total cholesterol, triglycendes, low-density lipoprotem cholesterol, high- density lip oprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein A, and apohpoprotem B and apolipoprotem E and lipoprolem (a) concentrations were measured in 48 epilectic patient taking anticonvulsant drugs for longer than 12 months. 16 healthy, sex-and age-matched people served as controls. Results: Epilepsy itself did not influences the level of serum lipids. TC.TG, HDL-C, Apo-A, Lp(a) were significantly increased after antiep ileptic therapy with CBZ and PHT(p0. 05), and LDL-c,Apo-B,Apo-E did not changed. VPA did not influence the level of serum lipids. Conclusion: These Data indicate that proplonged anticonvulsant treatment could increase serum lipids concenratoms and it may be useful to measure the levels routinely in order to prevent atherosclerosis in epileptic patients taking anticonvulsant drugs.
