Abstract:Objective: To find out the effects of estrogen and clomiphene on seizures induced by kainic acid. Methods: Ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley(SD) female rats were treated with estrogen or estrogen and clomiphene. We compared their epileptic behavior, electroen-cephalogram(EEG) and hippocampal cell damage when they were induced seizures. Results: The latency and time of reaching 4 or 5 degree in the groups added estrogen reduced more greatly than KA group, while the latency of KA + E20 + C group(adding estrogen and clomiphene) became prolonged significantly than KA + E20 group(only adding estrogen). The changes of EEG were accordant with their behaviors. There were cell damages in the hippocampus of all epileptic rats and compliant with severity and time of seizures. Conclusion: High-level estrogen can be proconvjlsant and clomiphene may have some antiepileptic effects.
