Abstract:Objective To introduce the principles of software named ‘blood shear stress quantitative analysis’ and Hagen-Poiseuille equation, and to explore the methods of quantitative analysis of wall shear stress with ultrasound in the common carotid artery (CCA) in healthy population. Methods The dynamic color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) data (in DICOM format) in the CCA in 70 healthy volunteers were collected and inputted to the software named ‘blood shear stress quantitative analysis’. The software generated the spatial distribution of WSS and the mean value of WSS. The results of the two methods were compared. Results The spatial distribution of WSS in the CCA was successfully visualized by the software. The spatial distribution of WSS was low at the center of the blood vessel while high near the vessel wall. The WSS of each segment was not completely the same. There were a little high or low changes. The mean value of WSS in the right CCA was (8.27±1.51) dyne/cm2 and in the left CCA was (8.12±1.65) dyne/cm2 according to the software. While the mean value of WSS in the right CCA was (8.34±1.95) dyne/cm2 and in the left CCA was (8.38±1.37) dyne/cm2 according to Hagen-Poiseuille equation. There was no significant difference in the mean value of WSS between the two methods (P>0.05). Bland-Altman method was used to analyze their agreement. The bias in bilateral CCAs was smaller. The bias in the right CCA was 0.069 500 1 and in the left CCA was 0.316 000. The agreement was good. Conclusion It is suggested that the software can evaluate WSS in the CCA accurately and conveniently like Hagen-Poiseuille equation. The software makes it possible to ‘visualize’ WSS in the CCA. And it can display the changes of WSS in different spatial locations precisely.
