Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) and body composition in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) with normal thyroid function. Methods From October 2014 to June 2016,963 hospitalized T2DM patients were retrospectively collected in the department of endocrinology in affiliated hospital of Nanjing University. According to the level of BMI,The subjects were divided into normal weight group, overweight and obese group.249 underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to detect the contents of fat, muscle and bone. TSH levels and body compositions were compared among three groups. Results TSH levels in overweight group 1.8(1.2~2.5) mIU/L and obese group 2.0(1.5~2.6) mIU/L were higher than those in normal weight group 1.7(1.2~2.5) mIU/L in T2DM patients with euthyroid status (F=13.92,P<0.05).TSH and FT3 were positively correlated with BMI(r=0.066 and r=0.188,both P<0.05). TSH was positively associated with the content of fat mass(r=0.193,P<0.05),but inversely correlated with the content of muscle mass(r=-0.204,P<0.05). After adjustment for age,HbA1c and BMI,the correlation between TSH and body composition remained unchanged. Conclusion In euthyroid type 2 diabetic subjects,TSH is positively associated with BMI and fat mass, but inversely correlated with the content of muscle mass.TSH does not influence the distribution of body composition.
