Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of catheter ablation on left ventricular function in patients with atrial fibrillation ( AF) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction ( LVEF <50% ) . Methods This study was a prospective cohort study. According to catheter ablation performance, 97 AF patients with reduced LVEF were enrolled in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from January 2017 to April 2018, and they were divided into surgical groups according to whether catheter ablation was performed, including 48 patients in the ablation group and 49 patients in the non-ablation group. Left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVDD), diastolic ventricular septal thickness ( IVSD), LVEF, end diastolic posterior wall thickness ( LVPWD) and the change of N-terminal natriuretic peptide precursor ( NT-proBNP) level were observed at 6-month follow-up. Results There were no significant differences in age, sex ratio, underlying disease, medication and cardiac function between the two groups (all P>0. 05). After 6-month of follow-up, compared with non-ablation group, the LAD [(35. 4 ± 2. 0) mm vs. (40. 8 ± 2. 8) mm, P<0. 05], LVDD[(48. 6 ± 1. 7) mm vs. (52. 1 ± 2. 4) mm, P<0. 05], IVSD [(9. 9 ± 1. 9) mm vs. (11. 5 ± 2. 8) mm, P<0. 05], LVPWD[(10. 0 ± 0. 8) mm vs. (11. 2 ± 0. 9) mm, P<0. 05] and serum NT-proBNP [(480. 1 ± 102. 8) pg/ml vs. (1 117. 8 ± 231. 4) pg/ml, P <0. 05] were significantly lower in ablation group, while LVEF was significantly higher in ablation group (46. 8% ± 12. 4% vs. 44. 1% ± 3. 7% , P<0. 05). Conclusions Catheter ablation could significantly improve left ventricular function in patients with AF and reduced LVEF.
