The relationship of social isolation and stroke among the middle-aged and the elderly in China

Abstract:Objective To examine the relationship between social isolation and stroke .Methods Data were derived from wave 2011 and wave 2013 of a national representative sample of people aged 45 or older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study ( CHARLS) .Missing data were dealed with Multiple Imputation Method .Social isolation was regarded as the exposure factor .Chi-square test was used to examine the differences of stroke morbidity among different characteristics of the respondents in wave 2011 .Marginal Structural Modelwasappliedtoexaminetherelationshipbetweensocialisolationandtherisksofstroke.Results 8768individualsaged45orolder were included.There were 70 new cases(0.8%)of stroke occurred,and the stroke morbidity among social isolated was 1.29% and was 0.72%among not social isolated.Stroke morbidity among male,aged 60 or older,smoking history,hypertension,diabetes,and dyslipidemia were higher(P<0.05).The results from marginal structural models showed that social isolation increased the risk of stroke (OR=1.91;P=0.037).Conclusions Social isolation is a risk factor of stroke among middle-aged and older adults in China.They should be encouraged to participate more social organizations and social activities to improve their status of social isolation .
