Abstract:Objective:To investigate the relationship between the Insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ and atherosclerotic plaques and to explore its possible mechanism in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Method:We measured circulating levels of free IGF-Ⅰ and total IGF-Ⅰ in 77 patients with ACS(40 patients with acute myocardial infarction, 37 with unstable angina), 38 with stable angina (SAP) and 33 controls without atherosclerosis by ELISA. Result:Serum free IGF-Ⅰ was significantly higher in ACS than SAP (P 0.05); serum total IGF-Ⅰ was significantly lower in ACS and SAP than in controls(P 0.05), but have no significant difference among the coronary heart disease (CHD) subgroups (P 0.05). Free IGF-Ⅰ levels were not associated with the extent of diseased coronary artery and Gensini score, but total IGF-Ⅰ was significantly and inversely associated with Gensini score(P 0.01). Conclution:The lowered total IGF-Ⅰ levels have no relation to atherosclerotic plaque instability, which is not looked as the criteria marker of ACS. But the higher free IGF-Ⅰ levels take part in the development of atherosclerosis plaque which can indicate the instable plaque.
