Abstract:Objective To study the pulmonary function changes and CT appearance in medical workers who had severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).Methods Clinical questionnaire, pulmonary function test, chest CT,and SaO_2 test were performed in 76 SARS medical workers after they were discharged from the hospital. Results The main symptoms among the 76 medical workers were:weakness (67 cases,88.2%),alopecia (57 cases,75.0%),osteodynia and arthrodynia(54 cases,71.1%),dyspnea (31 cases,40.8%),acne (20 cases,26.3%),palpitate (18 cases,23.7%),edema of lower extremity (15 cases,19.7%),and menstruous disturbance (12 cases,19.4% of female).41 cases (53.9%) had abnormal CT findings, which included diffused or scattered ground glass-like images, diffused or localized thickness of interlobular septum or fibrous bundles, pleural nodus (5 cases,6.6%) and tractional bronchiectasis (3 cases,3.9%).4 cases (5.3%) of the 76 medical workers had impaired diffusion capacity,1 case demonstrated mild lowered obstructive ventilation function and 1 case had decreased MMEF after (71±14) days discharged from hospital.Re-examing the 6 cases after 40 days revealed only 1 case still had mild obstructive ventilation function disturbance while the other 5 cases had recovered.16 cases (21.1%) demonstrated impaired ventilatory reserve with a range of 57% to 85% and an average of (79.5±7.0)%.The average SaO_~2 of 76 medical workers were 96%~100% (98.5±0.9)% after discharge. Conclusion The patients recovered from SARS have some sequels and some abnormal CT manifestations, however, their pulmonary function recovered in general without permanent impairment.
