Abstract:Surgical resection of liver metastases is the best treatments for colorectal liver metastases, and can cure some patients or substantially prolong their survival. More patients received preoperative chemotherapy in practice, however the severity of chemotherapy associated liver injury and its effect on the safety of surgery was still in need of accurate evaluation. Indocyanine green (ICG) clearance test is one of the means of quantitative evaluation of hepatic reserve function, and successfully reflects abnormalities in hepatic reserve function in cirrhosis liver. However, whether ICG test can reflect the effects of chemotherapy induced liver injury on hepatic reserve function was still controversial. This article briefly reviews the principle and applications of ICG clearance and the correlation between ICG abnormalities and chemotherapeutic liver damage and its severity degrees. The usefulness of ICG test in the estimation of the postoperative risk of morbidity after liver resection and factors that may influence ICG index was also explored.
