Abstract:Objective To evaluate the association between salivary α-synuclein concentration and non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Methods A total of 120 outpatient clinic PD cases were recruited. The Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE),17-item Hamilton Rating Scale (HAMD-17),the Rapid Eye Movement Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ),16-item odor identification test(SS-16) and the ROME Ⅲ criteria for chronic constipation were used to evaluate NMS.Salivary total α-synuclein was assayed using a highly sensitive Luminex assay and the relationship between saliva α-synuclein levels and NMS was analyzed. Results There were no statistical correlations between salivary α-synuclein levels and NMS in PD patients after controlling age and sex(P > 0.05).Conclusion There is no association between salivary α-synuclein concentration and NMS.
