Abstract:To determine whether Chlamydia psittaci could survive and multiply in the free-living amebae, the elementary bodies(EB) were co-cultivated with Acanthameba castellanii or Acanthamebae polyphaga respectively, and the growth of C.psittaci was observed under electron microscopy. It was found that the evidences of infection in Acanthamebae could be demonstrated by the observations in electron microscopy, in which EB entered to the trophozoites through endocytosis, and they mainly distributed with the vacuoles of phagosomes. It was also demonstrated that the reticulate bodies (RB) of C. psittaci multiplied within vacuoles by binary fission, and they released into the extracellular medium within vesicles or after lysis of amebae. These observations indicate that C.psittaci can survive and multiply in the free-living amebae, suggesting the possibility that Acanthamebae may be an additional host for C.psittaci.
