Standardized post-operative management of differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Abstract:Standardized postoperative management of differentiated thyroid carcinoma is the key point for long-term survival.The initial risk assessment of recurrence based on intra-operative finding,pathological and molecular characteristic of the tumor,postoperative serum thyroglobulin level should be proceed in the first few weeks post-operation.It can guide the formulation and implemention of initial treatment plan and two years follow-up program post-operation.Depending on how the patients respond to the initial treatment,the risk should be reevaluated in order to guide the long-term follow-up management two years after surgery.The radioactive iodine ablation,thyrotropin suppression and external beam irradiation treatments are important supplements to initial surgery.Monitoring components including the serum thyroglobulin level,thyroid function,ultrasound,fine-needle aspiration and so on are essential basis of standardized post-operative management.
