Abstract:Exported proteins of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum interact with molecules of the erythrocyte membrane and induce substantial changes in morphology, physiology and function of the host cells. These changes underlie the pathological characteristics responsible for the deaths of 1.5-3 million people every year due to malaria infection. Our knowledge of the molecular basis for these processes has increased dra-matically over the last few years owing to the rapid development of genomic and biochemical studies. This re-view summarized the molecules involved in cytoadherence and antigenic variation of P. falciparum.
