Abstract:Objective To evaluate effects and functional outcomes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ( ECMO) for the treatment of fulminant myocarditis . Methods From February 2014 to July 2015, 6 patients ( 3 male and 3 female; mean age:35.7 ±9.3 years old) with fulminant myocarditis were treated with femoral veno-arterial ECMO for refractory cardiogenic shock and life-threatening arrhythmia . Results The mean duration of ECMO was 213.0 ±83.8 hours.Five patients were successfully weaned from ECMO,include one patient died due to multi-organ failure. The other patient died due to severe sepsis .Four patients were discharged from the hospital , and survival at follow-up for 6, 18, 20, and 5 months, respectively. The left ventricular ejection fractions (LVEF) were 65%, 66%, 55%, and 71%, respectively. Conclusion We recommend ECMO in patients with fulminant myocarditis and refractory cardiogenic shock and life-threatening arrhythmia to facilitate myocardial recovery .
