Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of S-adenosylmethionine on the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) resection during perioperative use. Methods Fifty-four resectable HCC patients were randomly divided into S-adenosylmethionine treatment group (group S, 28 cases) and conventional treatment group (group R, 26 cases). The perioperative parameters, liver function, renal function and immune function were compared between two groups. The side effects and drug cost were compared as well. Results There was no significant difference of the data between two groups preoperatively. S-adenosylmethionine was given to the patients in group S 3 days before operation for protecting liver function. Regular drugs of protecting liver function were used for the patients in group R. ALT (66.1±20.3) U/L and TBIL (38.1 ±15.4) μmol/L of the patients in group S on seventh day after operation were lesser than those of the patients in group R [(85.8±38.5) U/L and (60.6±20.5) μmol/L] (P<0.05). The blood ammonia of the patients in group S decreased compared with that in group R [(40.4 ±13.6) vs (60.4 ±13.5) μmol/L, P<0.05]. The lymphocyte percent and IgG of the patients in group S on seventh day after operation increased significantly (P<0.05) compared with those in group R. There was no statistical difference of the period of postoperative temperature that returned to normal and the average hospitalization days of the patients in group S compared with those in group R. The patients in group S had no obvious side reaction but significantly higher in drug cost (P<0.05). Conclusions Perioperative prophylactic application of S-adenosylmethionine for the patients with HCC has stable and reliable effects on protection of liver function. S-adenosylmethionine has better tolerance and lower side reactions.
