Repair of Mouth Floor Defects Using Different Pedicled Flaps

Abstract:Objective To summarize the experience of repairing mouth floor defects with pedicled flaps in 1983～2003 and to evaluate the indications,advantages and shortcomings of the flaps.Methods 78 pateints (male:43 cases,female:35 cases,30-78 years old) with malignant mouth floor tumor from 1983.1 to 2003.12. were analyzed.Tumors were located at the anterior,lateral,or bilateral part of the mouth floor.Defects were repaired with labiogingival flap,buccal gingival flap,nasolabial flap,platysma myocutaneous flap,submental island flap,temporalis fascial flap,pectoralis major myocutaneous flap and sternoleidomastoid muscle flap.The survival and the therapeutic effect of all the flaps were compared.Results Postoperative infection occurred in one case of cheek reconstruction and another case of mentum reconstruction.Other cases was treated with no complication.Conclusion Labiogingival and buccogingival flap are acceptable for minor defects.Nasolabial flap is suitable for repairing defects of medium size.Plastyma myocutanepus flap and submental island flap can be used for large defects.Temporalis fascial flap and pectoralis major sternoleidomastoid myocuta-neous flap are used for tremendous defects.Sternoleidomastoid muscle flap is good for filling up the deep defect.
