Abstract:Objective:To study the characteristics of electrogastrography (EGG) in very low birth weight infants(VLBWIs) with different feeding methods.Method:From January to December 2018, stable VLBWIs admitted to our hospital were assigned into two groups according to their feeding methods (the breastfeeding group and the formula group). EGG recordings were performed before and after meals at 1d, 7d, 14d and 21d after birth.Result:A total of 78 VLBWIs were included in the study, 40 in the breastfeeding group and 38 in the formula group. The average postprandial amplitude was higher than preprandial amplitude in both two groups since 14 d after birth and the average amplitude increased with the postnatal age ( P<0.05). The percentage of postprandial normal slow waves in breastfeeding group was higher than the formula group since 7 d after birth ( P<0.05), and the percentage of normal slow waves increased with the postnatal age in both groups ( P<0.05). The dominant frequency of EGG was relatively low in both two groups and no significant differences existed between the two groups. Conclusion:Early postnatal enteral feeding may promote active gastric contractility in VLBWIs. Enteral feeding should be recommended as early as possible. Breastfeeding has advantages over formula milk in promoting gastric electrical maturation and breastfeeding should be considered as the first choice for VLBWIs.
