Abstract:Objective:To investigate the asymmetry and structural integrity of white matter fiber tracts in vivo in patients with schizophrenia by diffusion tensor imaging.Methods:Diffusion tensor imaging was performed in 31 schizophrenic patients and 30 healthy controls which with compared genders and ages.Fractional anisotropy was obtained from regions of interest in 22 different regions of white matter.Corpus callosum,inferior longitudinal fasciculus,cingulum and uncinate fasciculus were reconstructed through method of diffusion tensor tractography in 8 schizophrenia and 6 healthy controls.Drawn lines of each white matter fibers were calculated for statistical analysis.Results:Statistical analysis of fractional anisotropy values revealed that the patients with schizophrenia showed a lack of normal left-greater-than-right asymmetry in the white matter of temporal region seen in the comparison subjects.And relative to controls,the patients exhibited much lower fractional anisotropy value in white matters of several different brain regions which included bilateral frontal lobes,temporal lobes,occipital lobes,anterior cingulum,intermedia cingulum,and body of corpus callosum.But no significant differences between patients and controls in genu and splenium of corpus callosum,bilateral parietal lobes,semi-oval center,posterior limb of internal capsule and posterior cingulum were found.Statistical analysis of drawn lines of each reconstructed white matter tracts also showed the patients lacked a normal left-greater-than-right asymmetry.And the patients with schizophrenia had much lesser drawn lines of each fiber than controls.Conclusion:These findings indicate widespread alteration in brain white matter asymmetry and integrity of schizophrenia.And diffusion tensor imaging is a valuable tool in investigating the structure of in vivo white matter in schizophrenia.
