Pilot Evaluation of Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders in Patients from Psychiatric Hospitals in Beijing Urban Area

Abstract:Objective To evaluate costs of anxiety disorder and to provide economic evidence for disease prevention.Method Using health economic method,a retrospective costs-of-illness study was carried out.Data on costs of anxiety disorder were gathered by using a serf-designed questionnaire and the direct and indirect costs were calculated.Results (1) The yearly average costs of anxiety disorders per patient amounted to 16 509 Yuan,in which 63.5% for direct costs ( 10 490 Yuan) and 36.5% for indirect costs (6019 Yuan).(2) Median costs of anxiety disorder were 254 Yuan for an outpatient service visit and16 893 Yuan for hospitalization once.(3) The median costs of an outpatient service visit were 145 Yuan in the secondary psychiatric hospitals and 546 Yuan in the tertiary psychiatric hospitals.Conclusion The results indicate that anxiety disorder cause a heavy load to both the patients and their families.
