Abstract:Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the level of brain derived neurophic factor (BDNF) in serum and depressive symptoms and cognitive dysfunction of patients with major depression. Methods:One hundred and eleven patients with depression (depression group) and 35 healthy volunteers (control group) were enrolled.Self-made general questionnaire,Hamilton depression scale (HAMD)-17,Stroop neuropsychological screening test, word fluency test, logical memory and visual reproduction test were used to assess the severity of depression and cognitive function. All subjects were genotyped with regard to BDNF polymorphisms (rs6265).The level of BDNF in serum was detected. Results:The level of BDNF in serum of depression group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05).There was a negative correlation between the level of BDNF in serum and the HAMD test score (P<0.05),but no significant relationship was detected between the level of BDNF in serum and the neuropsychological test score (P>0.05).There was no significant relationship between BDNF polymorphisms and neuropsychological test scores (P> 0.05).Conclusion:The level of BDNF in serum is related with depressive symptoms, but it has no effect on cognitive dysfunction in patients with major depression.
