Abstract:Aim Report one case with sialidosis I and have a mini-review. Methods The clinical manifestation, ocular fundus examination, electroencephalogram, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results of the case were collected. With highly suspicion of Sialidosis type I, NEU1 gene screening was performed for further confirmation. Results A 17-year-old girl had a complaint of a 6-year progressive hypopsia, together with recurrent epilepsy and unsteady gait. Physical examination revealed cerebellar ataxia. Cherry-red spot and optic nerve atrophy of both eyes were demonstrated by ocular examination. Electroencephalogram revealed sharp and slow wave, spike and slow waves. The patient carried two heterogeneous NEU1 missense mutations c.544A>G (S182G) and c.239C>T (P80L), and her parents were proved to carry each one respectively. These two mutations were reported before. Conclusion Sialidosis type I is associated with late-onset progressive impaired vision, macular cherry-red spots, myoclonus, cerebellar ataxia, and epilepsy. But the ifnal diagnosis still lies on sialidase activity assay or genetic analysis.
