Effect of Chinese Herb Medicines on Hair Growth in Vivo

Abstract:Objective: To study the effect of Chinese herb medicines on the murine hair cycle in vivo. Methods: The mixture of extracts from Crataegus cuneata, Ligustrum lucidum, Grifola umbelata and Bletilla striata and ginseng saponin extractum were given by the intragastric administration (IA) and the topical application (TA) on the back skin of C57BL/6 mice. The anagen onset and its duration in the back skin of the mice were evaluated. Results: The extract mixture significantly induced the anagen onset, lengthened its duration and increased the velocity of hair growth by the intragastric administration (10 g/L and 30 g/L) and by the topical application (40 g/L and 80 g/L) respectively. The ginseng saponin extractum (3 g/L and 30 g/L) also had a promoting effect on the hair cycle by its topical application. Conclusion: Murine hair growth can be promoted by the mixture of extracts from Crataegus cuneata, Ligustrum lucidum, Grifola umbelata and Bletilla striata and ginseng saponin extractum.
