Clinical Features of Herpes Zoster Cases in Hospitalized Adults

Abstract:Objective In order to describe the clinical characteristics of herpes zoster in hospitalized adults by age, sex, location, and to investigate the features of lesions, associated neuralgia and treatment. Methods Clinical data of 246 herpes zoster patients in department of dermatology were analyzed retrospectively. Results The mean onset age of the herpes zoster among adults was (61. 3±13. 1) years, mostly occurring in those 50 to 70 years old and with a slightly high numbers of women. The parts of head and neck involved 41. 1% people, with approximately 30. 7 % of which was conjunctivitis. The type of lesions was mostly classic and the degree of pain was mostly moderate to severe. The degree of pain showed obvious difference on age and without significant differences on gender and location. 78% patients was treated with the combination of traditional Chinese and western medicine. Conclusion The majority of herpes zoster patients are middle-aged and elderly people. The clinical features of age, sex, rash, pain, and average days of herpes zoster in hospitalized adults are basically consistent with that of foreign reports. Patients with lesions on the head and face have a high rate of hospitalization, and conjunctivitis is the mostly common complication.
