Combination Therapy of Terbinafine and Fluconazole or Itraconazole in Mice Model with Systemic Infection Due to Fluconazole-resistant Strains of Candida Albicans

Abstract:Objective Efficacy of combined therapy with terbinafine and fluconazole or itraconazole was studied in the systemic candidiasis due to fluconazole-resistant strains of Candida albicans.Methods To establish systemic candidiasis model, animals were treated by terbinafine in conjunction with fluconazole or itraconazole.Results Terbinafine-fluconazole or itraconazole could prolong mice survival time and lower candida albicans’ colony form unit (CFU) in the kidneys than each of three drugs separately (P0.05).Conclusion Terbinafine-fluconazole or itraconazole might enhance the beneficial antifungal effect against Candida albicans and elucidate the potential utility of the combination therapy.
