Evaluation of Meibomian gland in patients with eyelid tattooing

Abstract:Objective This study is to observe changes in Meibomian glands in patients with eyelid tattooing and to assess the relationship between eyelid tattooing and ocular changes.Methods Eighty eyes from 40 tattooed female patients and 80 eyes from 80 healthy age-matched volunteers were enrolled in this study.Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer''s test (SIT), Meibomian gland expression score and lid margin abnormality score were compared between the two groups.A statistical level of P<0.05 was considered significant.Results Ocular symptom scores, lid margin abnormality and Meibomian gland expression were significantly higher in eyelid tattooed patients than in controls.BUT scores and SIT scores were significantly lower (P<0.01 for all scores).Conclusions Meibomian gland function may be altered in eyelid tattooed patients, which may affect tear film function and be associated with uncomfortable ocular symptoms.
