A Clinic Study of Treatment of Maxillofacial Fractures in Children

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to review the etiology and treatment of maxillofacial fractures in children, to analyse the relationship between fractures and individuality and to serve for better treatment in clinic.Methods: The retrospective review of patient records and radiographs was conducted during the 8-year period between 1994 to 2002 at the West China Stomatology Hospital (WCSH). Age, gender, etiology, anatomic site and treatment methods were reviewed.Results: During 8-year period, 71 patients of 141 maxillofacial fractures were treated.The age range was from 2 to 12 years (mean age, 5.7 years).The male to female ratio was 2.4∶1.Accidental falls were the main cause of the fractures.The highest incidence rate occurred in the 7-year-old to 8-year-old age group.The mandible was the most frequent bone of fractue.Chin fractures were the most in 25 cases.The 78% cases of condyle fractures were treated conservatively.The operation was the treatment in 75% of the body fractures of the mandible.Only 2 cases of maxilla fractures were treated in operation.Conclusion: Accidental falls were the leading cause of maxillofacial fractures in our area.The mandibular fractures were the most common.The conservative treatment was an ideal method in maxillofacial fractures in children.
