Influence of head position on postoperative frontal sinus drug deposition

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the influence of various head positions on postoperative frontal sinus drug deposition.Methods Full house surgery was performed in 4 fresh frozen cadaver heads.The glucocorticoid suspension was simulated by fluorescein sodium solution.One milliliter of fluorescein solution was dropped into the nasal sinuses in three different head positions respectively,and the fluorescein deposition was evaluated.The three head positions included head upright position,Mygind's position and praying-to-Mecca position.Results The fluorescein deposition was almost absent in upright head position.There was no difference of fluorescein concentration in frontal recess between Mygind'and praying-toMecca head positions (P ＞ 0.05).In the frontal sinus,the concentration of fluorescein in praying-to-Mecca head position was higher than that in Mygind's position.Conclusion The Mygind's and the praying-to-Mecca head positions are the optimal head positions regarding the delivery of topical medications to frontal recess,and the praying-to-Mecca head position is the best.
