Abstract:Objective To explore the association between family function and the children′s oral health-related behaviors and caries status. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 1332 children aged 5 years and their caregivers from 2011 August to December in Guangzhou. Data of the socio-demographic factors, family function, the caregivers′ and the children′s oral health-related behaviors, were collected through questionnaires which were completed by the caregivers. T test and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze the relationship between family function and the children′s oral health-related behaviors and caries. Results The results of t test showed that family function was significantly related to the children′s tooth brushing frequency (t = -2.275, P = 0.023) , but not significantly related to the children′s frequency of sweet snack intake, utilization of dental service, and pattern of dental visits (P>0.05) . In the multiple logistic regression model, the children′s tooth brushing frequency was not significantly associated with family function, but significantly associated with the children′s gender, mother′s and father′s education, caregiver′s tooth brushing frequency and oral health knowledge. Conclusion Family function has no impact on the oral health-related behaviors of the 5-year-old children in Guangzhou. Key words: Child; Health behavior, oral; Psychosocial factors; Family function
