Unexplained Visual Loss Following Removal of Silicone Oil

Abstract:Objective To access the clinicalcharacteristics ofvisuallossfollowingremovalofsiliconeoilandexplorethe underlying mechanism.Methods One hundred and ninety-five patients underwent silicone oil removal in our department from April 2016 to June 2017.Those suffered unexplained visual loss following removal of silicone oil were included.Results Nine(4.6％) patients (5 males and 4 females) were identified with a mean age 51.7±9.5 years.The meantime of silicone oil fill was 80±32 days.The mean visual loss was 3 lines(standard logarithmic visual acuity chart).The horizontal OCT scan through the macula of eyesunder silicone oil revealedsignificant thinning of the ganglion cell complex (GCC) 500μmtemporal and nasal fromthe foveacomparedwithcontralateraleyes(P ＜0.01).Conclusions The incidence of visual loss after silicone oil removal is 4.6％.The exact mechanism of vision loss remains unclear,but the pathophysiological presentation could exhibitthinning of GCC in the parafovea may.
