Abstract:Motion sickness is known to be an important and common factor affecting passengers' ride experience. With the popularization of intelligent vehicles, the development of multi-modal interaction methods will provide a chance to solve this problem. Therefore, the detection and mitigation of motion sickness will be an important topic for the future development of intelligent vehicles. However, detecting motion sickness using physiological and subjective data obtained in an on-road driving scenario has rarely been studied in related research. This paper proposed a solution framework for the physiological-signal-based motion sickness detection in on-road driving scenarios. Then, according to the framework, an on-road driving experiment is conducted to gather real-time physiological data using wearable devices. 12 participants took part in these experiments and about 120 min of motion sickness data were generated for analysis. The feature extraction was performed to analyze and extract the important physiological features related to motion sickness in real-world scenarios. Then the features were split into several combination groups and the representative machine learning models were trained to compare the results when different combinations were input. These detection models provide reasonable and effective detection when using the limited kind of physiological data. This method proposed in this paper will benefit the application of the motion sickness detection model in real vehicles. Meanwhile, since the visual input signals are not included, the solution is privacy-protected. In the future, with this solution, vehicles will also be able to detect motion sickness levels in real-time through low-cost daily wearable devices, such as smartwatches and glasses.

Abstract:Motion sickness is known to be a common problem that influences the comfort and work efficiency of human beings during their daily lives. With the proliferation of increasingly intelligent systems, the detection and mitigation of motion sickness will face more opportunities along with bigger challenges. On the one hand, the technology for integrated sensors in the intelligent system will provide more accurate and efficient methods for motion sickness detection. However, on the other hand, since cyber-physical systems have been gaining increasing concerns in the past two decades, the cyber-physical-social systems introduce and augment the social characteristics of such systems. The interactions between physical space and cyber space increase the chance of sensory conflicts when people use intelligent systems, such as traveling in intelligent cockpits or using metaverse-related virtual reality devices. The multimodal interaction methods and larger screens will cause more sensory conflicts. The symptoms will be more severe compared to traditional motion sickness. In this article, the classifications are first introduced based on the causes of motion sickness. A new type of multifactorial motion sickness (Xsickness) is discussed, which is foreseeable to be common with intelligent development. Then, the current state-of-the-art detection methods for motion sickness and cybersickness are summarized and theoretical methods for Xsickness detection are discussed. Finally, the mitigation methods based on motion reduction and four means of human perception are discussed and the innovative mitigation methods based on the intelligent system are also introduced.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. Motion sickness (MS) has long been a common complaint in road transportation. However, in the era of driving automation, MS has become an increasingly significant issue. The future intelligent vehicle is envisioned as a mobile space for work or entertainment, but unfortunately passengers' engagement in non-driving tasks may exacerbate MS. Finding effective MS countermeasures is crucial to ensure a pleasant passenger experience. Nevertheless, due to the complex mechanism of MS, there are numerous challenges in mitigating it, hindering the development of practical countermeasures. To address this, we first review two prevalent theories explaining the mechanism of MS. Subsequently, this paper provides a summary of current subjective and objective approaches for quantifying motion sickness levels. Then, it surveys existing methods for alleviating MS, including passenger adjustment, intelligent vehicle solutions, and motion cues of various modalities. Furthermore, we outline the limitations and remaining challenges of current research and highlight novel opportunities in the context of intelligent vehicles. Finally, we propose an integrated framework for alleviating MS. The findings of this review will enhance our understanding of carsickness and offer valuable insights for future research and practice in MS mitigation within modern vehicles.

Mitigating motion sickness in automated vehicles with vibration cue system

Abstract:Motion sickness is very common in road transport. To guarantee ride comfort and user experience, there is an urgent need for effective solutions to motion sickness mitigation in semi- and fully-automated vehicles. Considering both effectiveness and user-friendliness, a vibration cue system is proposed to inform passengers of the upcoming vehicle movement through tactile stimulation. By integrating the motion planning results from automated driving algorithms, the vibration cueing timing and patterns are optimised with the theory of motion anticipation. Using a cushion-based prototype of a vibration cue system, 20 participants were invited to evaluate this solution in two conditions of driving simulator experiments. Results show that the proposed vibration cue system could also help participants to comprehend the cues and to generate motion anticipation. The participants' motion sickness degrees were significantly lowered. This research may serve as one foundation for detailed system development in practical applications. <b>Practitioner Summary:</b> In automated vehicles, passengers engaging in non-driving tasks are apt to severe motion sickness. A vibration cue system and cueing strategy are proposed and optimised to inform passengers of the upcoming vehicle movement. Simulator experiments of 20 participants proved its effectiveness in promoting motion anticipation and reducing motion sickness.

Current status on researches of Meniere’s disease: a review

Abstract:<span><b>Background:</b> Meniere's disease (MD) is a complex and multifactorial inner ear disease. The etiology of MD is unclear. Significant progress had been made in diagnosis and treatment. Complete cure for this disease is still impossible.<b>Objectives:</b> This review covers the updated research results in MD in the past decades.<b>Material and methods:</b> Recent publications were critically reviewed.<b>Results:</b> The relationship between Endolymphatic hydrops and Meniere symptoms requires further study. Direct visualization of EH is achieved by special sequences of inner ear MRI. Appearance of EH could be observed in MD patients both in symptomatic and asymptomatic ears. Visualization of EH <i>in vivo</i> might make a great substantial improvement in diagnose of MD. The first goal of the management of MD is to reduce the attack frequency. Several safe and effective medical and surgical therapies are practiced to help patients to control vertigo and preserve hearing.<b>Conclusions and significance:</b> There has been no major breakthrough in the pathogenesis research of MD in recent years. Visualization of EH <i>in vivo</i> might make a great substantial improvement in diagnose of MD. Clinicians still have few effective ways to alleviate the progress of the disease.</span>

Effect of passengers' active head tilt and opening/closure of eyes on motion sickness in lateral acceleration environment of cars

Abstract:This study examined the effect of passengers' active head-tilt and eyes-open/closed conditions on the severity of motion sickness in the lateral acceleration environment of cars. In the centrifugal head-tilt condition, participants intentionally tilted their heads towards the centrifugal force, whereas in the centripetal head-tilt condition, the participants tilted their heads against the centrifugal acceleration. The eyes-open and eyes-closed cases were investigated for each head-tilt condition. In the experimental runs, the sickness rating in the centripetal head-tilt condition was significantly lower than that in the centrifugal head-tilt condition. Moreover, the sickness rating in the eyes-open condition was significantly lower than that in the eyes-closed condition. The results suggest that an active head-tilt motion against the centrifugal acceleration reduces the severity of motion sickness both in the eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. They also demonstrate that the eyes-open condition significantly reduces the motion sickness even when the head-tilt strategy is used.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Ethnopharmacological relevance</h3><p>Motion sickness is a multi-system syndrome caused by abnormal spatial environmental sensory conflicts. Tianxiang Capsule (TXC) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness for years. However, the main active components of TXC and mechanism of its therapeutic effects on motion sickness are still unclear.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim of the study</h3><p>The purpose of this work is to investigate the mechanism of TXC in preventing motion sickness based on serum metabolomics and network pharmacology. On the basis of the clear validation of the anti-motion sickness effect of TXC, we used the strategy of combined GC-MS metabolomics and network pharmacology to screen 60 differential metabolites regulated by TXC.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>The rat models of motion sickness were stimulated by biaxial rotational acceleration, spontaneous activity was used to evaluate the efficacy of TXC on motion sickness. Serum metabolomics-based analysis was conducted to screen the differential metabolites related to motion sickness. Then, network pharmacology analysis was used to integrate the information of differential metabolites with target proteins and chemical components, and the "components-target protein-metabolite related protein-metabolite" network was constructed to explore the mechanism of the protective effect of TXC against motion sickness.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>The results of network integration analysis showed that the 50 TXC potential active ingredients mediated the differential expression of 49 metabolic biomarkers by targeting 25 target protein and regulated arachidonic acid metabolism, calcium signaling pathways, <em>etc.</em> In addition, we found that TXC can promote the secretion of insulin mediated by arachidonic acid pathway metabolites, regulate the levels of adrenaline and leptin, maintain blood glucose balance, and achieve the therapeutic effect of motion sickness.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Our results indicated that the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway and related targets are the key ways for TXC to exert its efficacy, and its target protein and anti-motion sickness mechanism deserve further study. Our work proved that the integrated strategy of metabolomics and network pharmacology can well explain the "multi-component - multi-target" mechanism of complex TCM in vivo, which is a practical approach for the study of TCM formula.</p>

Abstract:Isorhamnetin has recently been found to exhibit a remarkable anti-motion sickness effect, yet the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Herein, network pharmacology was employed to conduct a preliminary analysis on the possible biological processes involved. Results showed that common targets were localized in membranes, mitochondria, and glutamatergic synapses. In particular, protein phosphorylation, protein serine/threonine/tyrosinase activity and signal transduction might play a role in isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness effect. Thus, mice phosphoproteomics analysis was further performed to explore the phosphorylated protein changes in the motion sickness process. Results showed that differentially phosphorylated proteins have an effect on postsynaptic density, glutamatergic synapses and other sites and are involved in various neurodegenerative disease pathways, endocytic pathways, cAMP signaling pathways and MAPK signaling pathways. Two key differentially phosphorylated proteins in glutamatergic synapses, namely, DLGAP and EPS8, might play key roles in isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness process. The final molecular experimental verification results from qRT-PCR and western blot analyses indicated that isorhamnetin firstly regulates glutamatergic synapses and then reduces the excitability of the vestibular nucleus through inhibiting the NMDAR1/CaMKII/CREB signaling pathway, ultimately alleviating a series of symptoms of motion sickness in mice. The findings of this study provide valuable insights and a useful theoretical basis for the application of isorhamnetin as a new anti-motion sickness food ingredient.

Personalized Trajectory Planning Algorithm Considering Passenger Motion Sickness Level

Abstract:Autonomous vehicle, though rapidly developing, still faces several challenges, one of which is motion sickness. It is necessary to mitigate motion sickness without sacrificing driving safety. Even if experiencing the same vibrational stimulus, people experience motion sickness differently. However, in the field of motion planning that considers motion sickness, current studies are mostly focusing on how to reduce the discomfort index in general ways, i.e. not considering for any specific passenger. Therefore, to exploit further potential of sickness mitigation, two important issues need to be solved, 1) how to predict the motion sickness level; 2) how to plan a sickness-less trajectory. To this end, firstly we construct a radial basis function neural network model to predict the motion sickness level of passenger, based on the extensive experimental data that we accumulated previously. Then, we integrate this passenger-specific model into trajectory planning in autonomous vehicles, which is formulated as an optimal control problem. Finally, two typical scenarios prone to evoking motion sickness have been simulated to validate the proposed algorithm, including the lane change while decelerating and the longitudinal accelerating scenarios. Results demonstrate that our algorithm can generate safe and comfortable trajectories that are customizable according to passenger's specific susceptibility to motion sickness. Particularly, for those highly susceptible to motion sickness, our algorithm can reduce their motion sickness degree by 21.55% and 15.68% in the two above scenarios, respectively, compared with the conventional planning algorithm based on polynomial.

Abstract:The prevalence of motion sickness among passengers using personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, during vehicle journeys has become a growing concern. This issue is expected to intensify with the increasing adoption of assistant or automated driving functions, which may lead to non-driving tasks (NDT) being performed by all on-board passengers, including the user in the "driver" seat during conditionally or fully automated driving modes. This trend presents challenges related to motion sickness, particularly in terms of specific performance requirements for non-driving tasks. In response to the need to alleviate passenger motion sickness, we have developed an easy-to-understand animation cue app that can be conveniently implemented on smartphones. The motion cue conveys information about vehicle accelerations, including their directions and magnitudes, using the metaphors of traffic signal colors and backward-moving lane lines, either in straight or curved lane driving. Following several rounds of improvements based on moving-base simulator and real car experiments, finally a successful cue design was found, which could significantly alleviate motion sickness of passengers while engaging in NDT, with minimal impact on their NDT performances. However, the study also revealed limitations to the sickness-alleviating capability of our motion cue design, including potential lack of universal acceptance among different users and reduced effectiveness in severely uncomfortable driving conditions. This work may provide valuable insights for further visual cue improvements that can contribute in future carsickness-proof vehicles.

Generating Visual Information for Motion Sickness Reduction Using a Computational Model Based on SVC Theory

Abstract:With the advancements in automated driving, there is concern that motion sickness will increase as non-driving-related tasks increase. Therefore, techniques to reduce motion sickness have drawn much attention. Research studies have attempted to estimate motion sickness using computational models for controlling it. Among them, a computational model for estimating motion sickness incidence (MSI) with visual information as input based on subjective vertical conflict theories was developed. In addition, some studies attempt to mitigate motion sickness by controlling visual information. In particular, it has been confirmed that motion sickness is suppressed by matching head movement and visual information. However, there has been no research on optimal visual information control that suppresses motion sickness in vehicles by utilizing mathematical models. We, therefore, propose a method for generating optimal visual information to suppress motion sickness caused from vehicle motion by utilizing a motion sickness model with vestibular and visual inputs. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we investigated changes in the motion sickness experienced by the participants according to the visual information displayed on the head-mounted display. The experimental results suggested that the proposed method mitigates the motion sickness of the participants.

A study on the relationship between anxiety and motion sickness

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between susceptibility,symptoms of motion sickness and state anxiety,trait anxiety.Methods Fifty youngs with history of motion sickness(study group) and 50 youngs without history of motion sickness(control group) were measured with Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire(MSQ),State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI),nausea profile of Motion Sickness Symptom Rating Scale before and after the riding experiment.The data was analyzed using correlation analysis.Results State anxiety and trait anxiety showed no significant correlation with the susceptibility of motion sickness,while showed significant positive correlation with the symptoms of motion sickness.The degree of correlation between state anxiety and symptoms of motion sickness was significantly higher than that between trait anxiety and symptoms of motion sickness(P<0.01).The degree of correlation between anxiety and psychological symptoms of motion sickness was significantly higher than that between anxiety and physiological symptoms of motion sickness(P<0.01).Conclusion State anxiety and trait anxiety are positively related with symptoms of motion sickness.Anxiety may be an important psychological factor influencing motion sickness.

Abstract:【Objective】 To observe the influences of different odors on the motion sickness of juvenile mice.【Methods】 The motion sickness symptomatic score,the open field test and the autonomous movement test were performed to examine the effects of the pre-administration of Ginger juice spray,orange juice spray,Chinese essential balm spray and smoke of cigarettes,respectively,on the symptoms of juvenile mice model of motion sickness.【Results】 Pre-administration of Ginger juice spray,Chinese essential balm spray or smoke of cigarettes did not influence the motion sickness symptomatic score of juvenile mice model of motion sickness.Pre-administration of orange juice spray increased the motion sickness symptomatic score of juvenile mice model of motion sickness.Pre-administration of smoke of cigarettes increased the anxious related symptoms of juvenile mice model of motion sickness in the open field test.Pre-administration of Ginger juice spray,orange juice spray,Chinese essential balm spray and smoke of cigarettes did not affect the autonomous movement of juvenile mice model of motion sickness.【Conclusion】 Pre-administration of Ginger juice spray,orange juice spray,Chinese essential balm spray and smoke of cigarettes do not impact the symptoms of juvenile mice model of motion sickness.
Mitigating Motion Sickness in Automated Vehicles with Frequency-Shaping Approach to Motion Planning.

Abstract:With automated driving, human drivers have been partially, and in the future will be fully, relieved from driving tasks, and it becomes more important to mitigate car-sickness in self-driving vehicles. Previous research on reducing motion sickness mostly focus on improving the cockpit environment through human factors engineering, while few efforts have been made through vehicle motion optimization, especially from the view of vehicle longitudinal and lateral accelerations. To this end, we propose a new conception to settle car-sickness issues in motion planning rather than in motion control, i.e., to first plan a desired set of vehicle motion less likely to cause car-sickness and then to track the desired motion. We develop a novel motion planning algorithm via frequency shaping approach, which incorporates the essential mechanism of car-sickness. Simulation and experiment results indicate that the proposed approach can reduce motion sickness dose value (MSDV) by 21% and 37%, respectively, comparing with the polynomial-based planning algorithm that optimizes acceleration and jerk magnitudes.

Abstract:This paper examines the feasibility of incorporating visual cueing systems within vehicles to mitigate the risk of experiencing motion sickness. The objective is to enhance passenger awareness and the ability to anticipate the forces associated with car travel motion. Through a comprehensive literature review, the findings demonstrate that visual cues can mitigate motion sickness for particular in-vehicle configurations, whereas their influence on situational awareness is not clear yet. Each type of visual cue proved more effective when presented in the peripheral field of view rather than solely in the central vision. Promising applications can be found within interactive screens and ambient lighting, while the use of extended reality shows potential for future investigations. In addition, integrating such systems into highly automated vehicles shows potential to improve their overall user acceptance.
Long and short-term characteristics of motion sickness: a test track investigation in a passenger car

Abstract:With the development of autonomous cars, the incidence of motion sickness has increased. Current studies on the characteristics of motion sickness have primarily focused on its long-term characteristics while ignoring its short-term characteristics, especially for the reporting time of the real-time evaluation method. This study explores the long and short-term characteristics of motion sickness, and uses self-reported motion sickness ratings at the end of car motion (the high point) and 3 s after the end of motion (the low point). Motion sickness ratings increased with task vs. no-task conditions. There is no significant correction between gender and maximum motion sickness in this study. Moreover, participants with high motion sickness susceptibility experienced increased motion sickness. The difference between the low point and the high point is found to decrease as the motion sickness ratings increase.

Abstract:Motion sickness is a common disease encountered in traditional vehicles as well as autonomous vehicles, which will negatively affect user acceptance. To make clear the pathogenesis of motion sickness, this study focused on drivers’ brain activity changes before and after motion sickness happens. Based on the six-degree-of-freedom driving simulator and noninvasive functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a database containing driving operation data synchronized with drivers’ brain activity record from 52 participants was collected under straight and curved driving conditions. The correlation analysis between motion sickness and changes of cerebral oxyhemoglobin concentration in the cerebral cortex was carried out based on this database. Results suggest that brain activity associated with motion sickness may differ under different driving conditions. However, the emergence of motion sickness responses is related to the occipital lobe under both driving conditions. Experimental results corroborate with several theoretical hypothesis about motion sickness in neuroscience. Consequently, this study proposes a new approach to research the mechanism of the correlation between motion sickness and cerebral cortex activity, which will contribute to developing the driving assistance system for preventing or alleviating motion sickness in autonomous vehicles.
Ergonomic Path Planning for Autonomous Vehicles-An Investigation on the Effect of Transition Curves on Motion Sickness

Abstract:Motion sickness in self-driving cars is a key human factor that aggravates the passengers’ health in autonomous vehicles and is investigated in the following pages. As drivers turn into passengers and passengers dwell into other activities, the probability of car sickness is inevitable in self-driving cars. Path planning could serve an important role in reducing sickness. The present study establishes thresholds that contribute to motion sickness from a vehicle’s dynamic point of view to generate at first the most susceptible reference track to motion sickness, then redesigned using B-spline, Bezier, and Hermite curves to investigate the thresholds. Trajectory tracking of an eight degree of freedom vehicle model within the Autodriver algorithm is then studied using curvature dependent and curvature independent controllers to draw a comparison. Results are then compared and evaluated to find the optimal transition curve to minimize motion sickness probability. Furthermore, the findings are applied to lane changing maneuvers using various transition curves. Results indicate that four out of five of the motion sickness thresholds were successfully addressed in this investigation. Further research is recommended to address the fifth motion sickness threshold by utilizing the transition curve’s key characteristics like local control and non-uniformity.

Abstract:Motion sickness is a physiological condition that negatively impacts a person's comfort and will be an emerging condition in autonomous vehicles without proper countermeasures. The vestibular system plays a key role in the origin of motion sickness. Understanding the susceptibility and (mal) adaptive mechanisms of the highly integrated vestibular system is a prerequisite for the development of countermeasures. We hypothesize a differential association between motion sickness and vestibular function in healthy individuals with and without susceptibility for motion sickness. We quantified vestibular function by measuring the high-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) using video head impulse testing (vHIT) in 17 healthy volunteers before and after a 11 min motion sickness-inducing naturalistic stop-and-go car ride on a test track (Dekra Test Oval, Klettwitz, Germany). The cohort was classified as motion sickness susceptible ( n = 11) and non-susceptible ( n = 6). Six (out of 11) susceptible participants developed nausea symptoms, while a total of nine participants were free of these symptoms. The VOR gain (1) did not differ significantly between participant groups with ( n = 8) and without motion sickness symptoms ( n = 9), (2) did not differ significantly in the factor time before and after the car ride, and showed no interaction between symptom groups and time, as indicated by a repeated measures ANOVA ( F (1,15) = 2.19, p = 0.16. Bayesian inference confirmed that there was "anecdotal evidence" for equality of gain rather than difference across groups and time (BF 10 < 0.77). Our results suggest that individual differences in VOR measures or adaptation to motion sickness provocative stimuli during naturalistic stop-and-go driving cannot predict motion sickness susceptibility or the likelihood of developing motion sickness.
