Abstract:Objective To detect cerebral microbleeds by using susceptibility weighted imaging and explore the relationship be-tween cerebral microbleeds and scores of mini-mental state examination (MMSE).Methods A total of 56 patients were enrolled in cognitive outpatient department in our hospital, including 34 patients with Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and 22 mild cognitive impair-ment patients(MCI).In addition,32 volunteers without cognitive impairment were recruited as the control group. All patients un-derwent MMSE evaluation, conventional MRI and susceptibility weighted imaging.Images were analyzed by an experienced radiolo-gist to assess the presence of infarction, brain atrophy and microbleeds. The number and location of microbleeds were recorded. Then linear analysis were used with SPSS 13.0 to define the relationship among age, cerebral microbleeds, risk factors of cerebral vascular disease,MMSE score, infarction, and brain atrophy. Results A total of 233,41,57 microbleeds were found in the brains of AD,MCI and control patients respectively. The linear analysis showed that the number of cerebral microbleeds was associated with MMSE score and brain infarctions (P =0.008 and 0.020 respectively). The ratio analysis revealed that microbleed numerous-ness was strictly in the lober cortical and subcortical white matter, and microbleeds were related to worse cognitive function.Conclu-sion Evaluation of number and location of microbleeds by SWAN in the brain is helpful to predict the existence of micro-vacular dis-ease.The impairment of cognition is associated with numerous microbleeds, which are potentially distributed in lobar region in AD.
